Darrell Green's Vision
Darrell remembers several turning points in his life when his opportunities were limited by family life and circumstance—when simple love and guidance were all that were needed to get him through his difficult times. When he was 10, Darrell's parents separated, and his mother and six siblings were forced to move to a housing project. Despite these tough circumstances, Darrell found support and guidance in the form of his high school track coach, his college experiences, his faith, and his NFL career. These positive influences in Darrell's life helped to shape him into the successful businessman and community leader he is today.
Because Darrell was able to realize his potential through a strong values system, opportunity for education, a nurturing community, and family support, he is now committed to creating positive turning points for the children and families of every community. In 1988, he and his wife, Jewell, founded the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation as a response to the needs of children, families, and communities.
Darrell Green's Background
A native of Houston, Texas, Darrell Green was a seven-time All-Pro defensive back for the Washington Redskins. After an illustrious 20 year career with the Redskins - Darrell retired in 2002. He was the Redskins' top draft choice out of Texas A&I University in 1983 and has played in three Super Bowls. In 1998, Green completed his Bachelor of Science degree in general studies and social science at St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Virginia. In 1999, Marymount University recognized Green for his extraordinary humanitarian work and conferred upon him the honorary degree of doctor of humane letters.
Darrell believes that faith, discipline, honor, hard work, and sportsmanship are important and necessary values not only for professional athletes but for children and anyone who aspires to become a productive citizen. According to Darrell, children cannot be expected to grow on their own. For these qualities to shine, to truly flourish, all children must be given the guidance and support systems they need and deserve.
